Sourcing and supply chain management (SCM) are closely linked, as both aim to ensure that the necessary materials, products and services reach the company efficiently, cost-effectively and to the required standard.
Whilst sourcing focuses on the identification, selection, negotiation and development of strategic suppliers, SCM encompasses a broader scope that includes planning, procurement, production, storage, transport and distribution.
In this respect, sourcing is one of the cornerstones of a robust supply chain, as the decisions made when selecting suppliers have a direct impact on costs, lead times, quality and responsiveness to highly competitive markets.
An effective sourcing strategy helps to improve the overall performance of the supply chain by reducing risks, ensuring supply and fostering long-term collaborative relationships with key suppliers.
In turn, comprehensive supply chain management provides the information and processes needed to continuously assess supplier performance and optimise procurement decisions.
In an increasingly globalised business environment, both disciplines must work in a coordinated manner to boost competitiveness, improve resilience to disruptions and generate sustainable benefits for the organisation.
